The changeover is a rarity for the traditional newspaper dating back to 1780. The goal from the beginning has been more of an evolutionary than revolutionary plan. If one however takes into account the past 60 years of the NZZ the step just taken is comparable to that of the change that took place in 1946 from Fraktur to Antiqua typeface.?
Apart from intentional artistic and newspaper-related architectural concessions to accommodate changed reading behaviour, Meiré und Meiré concentrated significantly on visualisation and accessibility of the inner qualities and substance of the newspaper. The project was realised in close collaboration with the NZZ chief editor Markus Spillmann and the NZZ art director Brigitte Meyer.
